What this blog is about and what I hope it does...

I hope this will be a simple fun tool for us to grow in our understanding and surrender to God through the Bible as we connect over the web. Reading the Bible is both simple and difficult. What could be easier than opening a book and reading? Yet we've all done that and wondered what sections of the Bible mean? What's with the book of Leviticus? What is Revelation really about? Is the Song of Songs about marital love or is it supposed to be more 'spiritual' than that?

So, my intent is for this blog to be a tool that helps us in our faith. A forum for better understanding. An honest place of sharing that nurtures us as we follow Jesus together.

(There are a few resources I have included under "PAGES" that may be a helpful start, especially to those newer to reading the Bible. It's located just below this and to the right. Also included is a READING OUTLINE. If you miss a day, go on to the next rather than trying to catch up.)

ONE LAST NOTE: you don't have to join or set up an account to share comments. Just click 'comment' at the bottom of a post, click the drop down and click 'anonymous.' Then write your post and if you want sign it with your first name and finish by clicking 'Post comment.' I would love to hear your thoughts.

GENESIS 12:10-20

For NIV reading click here http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+12%3A10-20&version=NIV

Curious about your thoughts on this story.

Abram and family still travelling about due to famine. Here Abram is worried about Sarai's beauty.

What does this story add to our understanding of Genesis, what God has been doing, etc.

Comments, questions.

Have a great day!

Prayers,
Matt

  1. We humans do some odd things when we're frightened, don't we? It's nice to see that, even when we walk with GOD HE doesn't always answer us and we're left to our own devices. And yet, GOD still gets what HE wants in the overall divine plan. How cool is that?

  3. A few thoughts:
(by the way, see chapter 20 and 26 for two more similar stories!!)
-that there was a famine is a reminder that hard times come even to those who live for God
-most likely, Abram's trip to Egypt was for an extended time, though not sure how long; Egypt was a place where many in the region went during famine because of the Nile river that provided consistently
-Abram had in some ways a legitimate fear (though see Andy's comments)...being an immigrant couple without a larger family or community for protection
-Sarai would have been 65 years old by this time...most have been a Sophia Loren look alike
-it was accepted and respected that a brother could defend his sister against unwanted suitors...Abram may have been thinking this (we learn later he is Sarai's half brother)
-his plans go haywire as Pharaoh was told about her and he took her into his harem!
-Pharaoh summons Abram after the skin diseases break out and asks Abram the same question God asked of Eve (3:13) and Cain (4:10)...ouch!
-Abram seemed more concerned about being blessed through Sarai rather than being a blessing to others
-yet, in all this, God's promises to Abram for the world will be fulfilled, so God sees that Abram is protected and released
-same is true for you and me: God's promises in Christ will be fulfilled, even if we mess up along the way...I gotta remember that this should motivate me toward more faithfulness...

  4. Abram called on the name of the LORD. I love that phrase . 3 times now in Genesis . In the New Testament we are told that all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved .

Matt , is there something in the Hebrew that would explain what Moses meant by " call on the name ....."

  5. Hey ! This calling on the Name business is turning out to be pretty important . Matter of fact it appears to be the basis for our salvation .Peter quotes Joel on Pentecost and tells us " everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved ."
    ( Joel 2:32 )( Acts 2:21 ). Then Paul repeats this again in Romans ( 12:13 ).
