In this chapter, Abram begins to wonder about God's promises, especially of fathering any children. Abram looks at his life and sees other ways in which God could fulfull His promises, and even has some suggestions for God:) I suppose we do this, too.
God reiterates His promises and Abram responds much like Zechariah and Mary each do in the first couple of chapters of Luke.
Abram chooses to trust God, and v. 6 marks how Abram will be remembered for centuries.
God responds with a covenant shrouded in mystery.
Great chapter. May God speak into your heart through His Word today.

What this blog is about and what I hope it does...
I hope this will be a simple fun tool for us to grow in our understanding and surrender to God through the Bible as we connect over the web. Reading the Bible is both simple and difficult. What could be easier than opening a book and reading? Yet we've all done that and wondered what sections of the Bible mean? What's with the book of Leviticus? What is Revelation really about? Is the Song of Songs about marital love or is it supposed to be more 'spiritual' than that?
So, my intent is for this blog to be a tool that helps us in our faith. A forum for better understanding. An honest place of sharing that nurtures us as we follow Jesus together.
(There are a few resources I have included under "PAGES" that may be a helpful start, especially to those newer to reading the Bible. It's located just below this and to the right. Also included is a READING OUTLINE. If you miss a day, go on to the next rather than trying to catch up.)
ONE LAST NOTE: you don't have to join or set up an account to share comments. Just click 'comment' at the bottom of a post, click the drop down and click 'anonymous.' Then write your post and if you want sign it with your first name and finish by clicking 'Post comment.' I would love to hear your thoughts.

"Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." This is a promise made to those who have entrusted their lives to CHRIST. I claim it as my own.
ReplyDelete"Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness." Believe is an interesting word. It does not mean acknowledge as a concept mentally. It DOES mean "cling to with all your heart, mind, soul and strength, no matter what, and DO." It's also the precursor to the aforementioned promise.
"...and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. Then the LORD said..." Ever notice that the LORD rarely speaks during the sunny, nothing's wrong, everything's in the right place kind of day? HE usually waits until it's rather stressful and uncertain before paying me a visit.
In my humble opinion, these are some of the strongest concepts in the entire OT.
Right on about 'believe' Andy. More spiritual anemia is present in Christ's body, the church because too many assume 'believe' just involves our inside thoughts/heart and not our hands, mouth, feet and whole lives. Belief is real only if it's lived, no matter how imperfectly.
ReplyDeleteSome of my reflections:
Verses 2-3 are so characteristic of us, aren't they. We look at our circumstances and sometimes think, ummm, God, I though you were going to take care of me/my family and come through on your promises...but it doesn't look like it.
And then, verse 5, is so characteristic of God, to somehow give a sign, sometimes a common already present sign (like stars) to say, 'trust me.'
I pray that I am more like Abram...to believe, really, really believe God.
The rest, like God's covenant with Abram here in ch. 15 is often a mystery as God works to bring about His perfect will.
