What this blog is about and what I hope it does...

I hope this will be a simple fun tool for us to grow in our understanding and surrender to God through the Bible as we connect over the web. Reading the Bible is both simple and difficult. What could be easier than opening a book and reading? Yet we've all done that and wondered what sections of the Bible mean? What's with the book of Leviticus? What is Revelation really about? Is the Song of Songs about marital love or is it supposed to be more 'spiritual' than that?

So, my intent is for this blog to be a tool that helps us in our faith. A forum for better understanding. An honest place of sharing that nurtures us as we follow Jesus together.

(There are a few resources I have included under "PAGES" that may be a helpful start, especially to those newer to reading the Bible. It's located just below this and to the right. Also included is a READING OUTLINE. If you miss a day, go on to the next rather than trying to catch up.)

ONE LAST NOTE: you don't have to join or set up an account to share comments. Just click 'comment' at the bottom of a post, click the drop down and click 'anonymous.' Then write your post and if you want sign it with your first name and finish by clicking 'Post comment.' I would love to hear your thoughts.

GENESIS 3

For NIV reading click here http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+3&version=NIV

Thought neither the word 'fall' nor 'sin' appear in this chapter, it has traditionally been described as the story of The Fall or the story of 'Original Sin,' and it certainly functions in that way.

It is an amazing chapter rich in layers of theology and a deep understanding what and how we all are in our relationship to God, others, and ourselves.

Your reflections, questions, possible applications...

  1. Some of my thoughts as I read this story: (1) we usually deal with problems by blaming; (2)fruit represents wanting what I want more than God; (3) the God who shaped humanity into being and breathed life into them is the God who shapes how we are supposed to live that life; (4) we so quickly latch onto half-truths that get us what we want than the whole truth that leads us to what we need; (5) the freedom to have everything except the one tree proves that getting what we want does not give us what we need; (6) only realize guilt when we are willing to be in the presence of the one we offended/sinned against...I think that's why people are always leaving, bailing, walking out, walking over and overstepping; (7) God's instruction always brings more freedom than our pursuit of autonomy!

  2. More than any other section of the bible , I feel this section has it's finger on the human condition .

Picture yourself like a toddler . All your needs met. Satisfied , satiated , complete . All your physical needs met and exceeded . All your emotional and spiritual needs met and exceeded .

There is nothing more that you would ever need that the loving Father does not provide . The absolute perfect life .

Then the lie is delivered . There is more !
You could have more ; it could be better ; lots better ; you could be like Him !!! He's keeping
something from you ; you are getting shortchanged !

So we buy into the lie ...... Hey wait a minute,
I work hard all day , I deserve this . So and so down the street has got this , why not me ?
What I'm doin doesn't hurt anybody else so......
    and besides , it's nobody's business but mine !

What we wind up with is cravings , desires , needs, wants for things other than God .What we end up with is greed , envy , jealousy , pride , ambition ,anger , and emotional hurt .

What would you give , right now , to go back to being like a toddler ? No stress . No emotional
pain and sadness, no fear of loss or rejection ,
no need for anything but the overwhelming all encompassing love of your Father . The tender , loving , spiritual , emotional , and physical embrace of the One who loves you so much that He would die for you .

I think the story of the fall is timeless .
That lie is speaking to you and me just as much as it spoke to Eve and Adam .

    Anyway , that's what I think .

  3. Good stuff, Doc...thanks! Self-pursuit always ends in anxiety and brokenness. Yeah, I could have the kind of worry-free, needs-met kind of life. And I know it's coming round again when Jesus returns:)
